Just a place for me to write down some thoughts and maybe get some feedback... maybe not.
"We love the ruffles and lace"Now, if that's not a good reason to pop out a kid, I don't know what is...
I don't get it. what's wrong with 17 children before hitting 45?
I had the exact same thought!
Dear heavens...Mind you, when I was in hospital giving birth to Hattie Gandhi my neighbour was a lovely Irish lady who was much exercised as to what to call her new born son. Her husband was one of 19 (11 of them living) and she was not prepared for young nameless to share a name with any one of his numerous cousins. When I went home, he was still anonymous.
...and homeschooled. Makes my head hurt just thinking about it...oh well and more, since I can't imagine birthing that many children.
I saw one of their shows on Discovery back when I had TV channels. It was a surprisingly not scary show. These people are very conservative Christians, and I disagree with most of their choices as their presented (17 kids??????), but they have this whole thing about not being in debt that is really attractive to me right now (being many thousands of dollars in debt both educationally and buying-a-new-house-ally).Having said all of that, when I was watching their show about building their house, my two main thoughts were also "Jim Bob? naturally" and "oh, homeschooled...of course." And yes, I'm a mean-spirited bad person--I definitely said both of those things out loud and called all my friends. ;-)
one would think a uterus would get mighty tarred. or fall out.Might have to get another teacher if they exceed the recommended number of students in the classroom....Handsome family too.
Some sweet old lady ends up with 17 cats it makes the news and the SPCA comes in and takes them away (and says she has boundary issues), but somehow 17 kids is OK?Just sayin'Sarah
Dear WS...do you have access to any of Frederick Beuchner's works..he has a great one (I think it is in the ABCs of Faith) on Jesus going to an enemy's house (Jairus) whose daugher is ill..Jesus arrives, yells at the paid mourners and even though they all insist that the child is dead, Jesus goes in and says, "Get up little girl " and she does. Beuchner then observes, how we would all like to tell our (deceased) loved one, "Get up, old man, get up old woman.." That a great black hole has just been punched in your life...but ...At any rate Buechner does it much more lyrically...hope you can find some inspiration....Funeral homilies are HARD... shalom (and knowing how much you have lost lately...blessings) Gail
Have you seen their family portrait done up all motivational poster-style? The wording underneath:VAGINAIt's not a clown car.
I think I remember reading somewhere that the average healthy woman using no birth control at all, (not even rhythm), and availing herself of all the benefits of modern medicine could expect to bear about 20 children between puberty and menopause. Me? Tubes tied after two kids and one miscarriage.
Healthy in what manner?17 children would NOT lead to any sort of mental stability. In most people, at least.
dogblogger, you're making me spit tea all over the screen. I'm just saying...I look at these folks and just shake my head. What are they thinking????? And the homeschooling on top of it? Damn, I barely managed with two children. They only turned out to be delightfully well-balanced human beings by grace and by glory, not by our excellent parenting skills. Of course, if we had decided to have 15 more, perhaps I would have figured it out. Nah.
Glad I could add some unpredictability to your day, Sue!
Dogblogger - I posted that exact poster on my blog. I have two kids, two dogs and two cats. Not to mention the box turtle and the beta fish. I can barely keep my head above water. Maybe I'm just jealous...nope.
The children are home-schooled by Michelle err just when does she have time to do that ???
Lorna, that's just what I was thinking... They may be fine people, but they certainly feed into a lot of stereotypes.Shaking my head...
Well said, rev dr mom.
Obviously you don't watch enough TLC!! They've been on a couple of times. They have a pantry that looks like the catering pantry at my college, a professional kitchen, and a laundry mat style laundry room. It's actually quite fascinating. There are a couple of other big family shows on tlc too, but I don't think any of them have 17, more like 12. . . . Uh, yeah, my boy has put me on TLC restriction. . . .
Who knows? Maybe she's the next Susanna Wesley and two of her kids are going to revive the church and write thousands of hymns.Lotsa kids and homeschooling worked for Wedlesy brothers just fine.
Pregnant for 10.5 years of her life!!!! Gah!
