Because Sometimes It is Appropriate

I have been standing vigil with a family at the bedside of their mother/grandmother. She long ago lost her mind to Alzheimer's and now has had no sustenance since last Wednesday (9 days ago). Three times now the family has been called in for her imminent departure only for everyone to finally straggle home, tired and drained, wondering what - if anything - she is waiting for. Last night I was with them from about 10pm until 5am.

If you have been involved in these things then you know things can swing from gravely serious to almost giddy as family members share stories and ease the tension by laughing at silly things.

Last night we laughed the hardest when one of the sons read out loud the pitching matchup for today's Yankees vs. Red Sox game:

Wang vs. Johnson (insert immature Beavis and Butthead laughter here)

I'm glad you were there with them, and very glad there was laughter.

Man, you're a good pastor. I cannot believe anyone is all over your ass for missing parts of a DINNER when you are spending your nights doing the real deal of being a minister instead.

And, you're funny, too.

That game was painful for the Red Sox...as was the later game...

And I hope you were there in mom-clothes. Really. I do the hospital thing in soft slacks and birkis. I think a certain someone would think that's a no-no, but hey, it's my hospital.

May God bless you and keep you as you sit vigil.
